Scientists count more than 2 million eels on one underwater mountain
Scientists studying Patience Seamount in Australia's Huon Marine Park found a massive gathering of eels each year with no known reason why this mountain is so attractive to them. The exact number of eels present was not previously known but has now been counted as over two million. The eels are thought to be attracted for spawning.
Why it's good news: It highlights the importance and mystery surrounding marine life in our planet's oceans.
Animal stories cover species recovery, rescue operations, conservation milestones, and the moments where humans and animals connect in unexpected ways. We are particularly interested in population recoveries for endangered species, successful rewilding programs, and veterinary breakthroughs.
