Oxygen collisions show evidence of jet quenching, a signature of early-universe matter
Scientists at RHIC have created a type of early-universe matter by colliding oxygen nuclei together. The collisions produce a quark-gluon plasma, which is characterized by energetic particles losing energy as they pass through the hot, dense matter left behind. This process mimics what happened in the universe just after its birth.
Why it's good news: This discovery provides insight into the early stages of our universe's formation, shedding light on the fundamental nature of matter and the universe itself.
The science section covers breakthroughs in medicine, physics, biology, and technology. We surface discoveries that expand what humanity can do, from new treatments reaching clinical trials to engineering feats that seemed impossible a decade ago.
