Decode the chatter of birds with a neuroscientist
If you're not a bird person, you may not be able to distinguish between the different sounds birds make. Birdsong - the courting and territorial vocalization of songbirds - has been studied for decades, but less is understood about bird chatter, or the other chirps made by all flock members throughout the day. Now, we have new insights into the meanings of their chatter, thanks to Julie Elie, an associate project scientist in Berkeley's Department of Neuroscience.
The science section covers breakthroughs in medicine, physics, biology, and technology. We surface discoveries that expand what humanity can do, from new treatments reaching clinical trials to engineering feats that seemed impossible a decade ago. Every link goes to the original publisher so you can read the full study or press release yourself.
If today's breakthrough story sparked something, a live 1-on-1 tutor can take you from curious to competent. First lesson guaranteed or your money back.
